August Derleth maintained an extensive journal from late 1935 all the way up to 1970, a year before his death. This journal, cumulatively consisting of millions of words, embodies his love of nature—especially of the flora and fauna in and around his native town of Sauk City, Wisconsin. As he ventured on long, contemplative outings in the countryside, he took note of the distinctive vegetation in the area, as well as the hawks, foxes, and other wild animals that inhabited it. Although Derleth published brief extracts from his journals in several books, this edition is the first to publish his journals in unabridged form. Read more
